Chigasaki, which became a city in 1947, is located about 50km southwest of Tokyo in the Shonan area in the central southern part of Kanagawa Prefecture. Given that it has been blessed with a moderate climate that offers cool summers and warm winters, it was among the best places to have a summer resort in Shonan from the late Meiji era to the period preceding World War II. Since surfing, hula dancing, and other aspects of Hawaiian culture are appreciated in this city, it became a sister city of Honolulu, Hawaii in 2014.
