Nanae Town, located to the north of Hakodate City in Hokkaido, led the way for introduction of western style agricultural methods into Japan in the Meiji Period. Nanae is now especially known for its apple production, and, since apples were cultivated here for the first time in Japan, the area is regarded as the birthplace of western apples. Agriculture and dairy farming are prosperous here. And the stunning beauty of Onuma Quasi-National Park, which is listed as one of the Three New Views of Japan, has long been attracting visitors for its aesthetic beauty.
